Further Information About BROOKS Ruby Margaret

Ruby Brooks was born on the 15th May 1922 and baptised at St Philip’s Church, Cambridge on the 22nd May 1922, the daughter of Thomas and Rosa brooks. Her father was employed at the time as a shunter on the Great Eastern Railway.

In 1945 Ruby was working as a V.A.D. nurse stationed in Johore. She was killed in a jeep accident along with another V.A.D. nurse, Diana Cooper, on the 25th October 1945. Her death was announced in the Daily Herald of 28th November 1945 along with a photograph.  Ruby was buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore.

The Saffron Walden Weekly News of 28th December 1945 reported the death of Private Samuel Whitley on the 11th August 1945 from beri-beri and heart paralysis in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Nagoya, Japan. The report included the information that Private Whitley was engaged to V.A.D. Ruby Brooks who had recently lost her life in a car accident.
