Search For A Casualty
The fields on the search form allow you to search by any of the available fields, or a combination of fields. Click into the field you wish to use for your search and select the appropriate entry from the list. You can choose as many filters as you wish.
Then click the Submit button to view the search results on the next page.
Please note that due to the large amount of data, it may take a few moments for the Submit button to refresh and be clickable.
When you click into a search field, you will see a box above the first choice. Type into this box and the choices will be filtered and you will be taken to any entries which match what you are typing.
We have tried to make our Casualty data as searchable as possible at Unit level.
All Services - Choose between Air Force, Army, Civilian, Navy (military and merchant navies, as well as Royal Marines) and subsequent filter fields will only be relevant to the chosen Service.
The next set of fields are relevant only if you have chosen Army in the All Services filter:
All Service Types - We have grouped Corps, Brigades and Regiments by the general area of specialism they operated with. Choices include: Air (any Airborne army units), Artillery, Cavalry (mechanised and Yeomanry units), Engineers, Infantry and Support Services (general non-combat units, such as Pay Corps, Labour Corps, R.M.P., R.A.S.C. etc.).
All Corps - Corps may be a slightly misleading heading because, as well as actual Corps, we have included some high-level Units such as Royal Artillery, Royal Field Artillery, Royal Horse Artillery, Royal Garrison Artillery, Expeditionary Forces, British Indian Army and United States Army in this category. The reason for this is so that associated brigades and regiments are more easily searched for.
All Regiments - The full formal name of the regiment, as it was known at the time of the Casualty's death is used. For example, in the First World War The Royal Berkshire Regiment was formally known as "Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment)". However by the Second World War the same regiment was known as "Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's)". In most cases, the word "The" has been omitted at the start of the regiment's name, which will help sort the list of regiments alphabetically.
All Units - This filter contains the lowest level units known for a Casualty - Companies, Batteries, Field Ambulances, etc.. If there is a Battalion such as "1st/5th Battalion" this will also be shown in this field as well as the All Battalions field showing "5th Battalion" for the same Casualty. Again, this has been done to facilitate searches for regimental battalions.
