Jacqueline Elizabeth AURET, VAD Nurse of Johannesburg, South Africa was born in 1914 at Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa to Captain Benedictus Jeremias and Lilian Anne Duckitt Auret, nee Cloete-Smith. She died at sea on the sinking of S.S. Ceramic by a torpedo from German Submarine U-515 on the 7th December 1942 aged 28. The ship was en-route from Liverpool for St. Helena, Durban & Sydney. There was only one survivor from the 656 people aboard.

The death certificate for Jacqueline Auret issued by the General Register and Record Office of Shipping and Seamen, Llantrisant Road, Llandaff, Cardiff on the 30th August 1943 lists her age as 28, birthplace or nationality: British, occupation: Mothercraft nurse, last place of abode: Post Natal Home, Panshanger, Herford, Supposed Drowned.
Jacqueline Auret’s father, Ben Auret, served as a Captain with the Royal Field Artillery during WW1. He was killed in action on the 21st September 1916 aged 35. He is buried in Albert Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
