David Younger was born on the 17th March 1871 at Leith, Midlothian, Scotland, the son of David Younger (1844-90) and Marie Isadora Younger (nee Macleay 1850-?). Siblings: Ethel K Younger, 1874; Francis N Younger, 1876; George K Younger, 1879; Henrietta L Younger, 1881.
David Younger was commissioned in the Gordon Highlanders in 1893 from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Edinburgh Artillery. He served on the North-west Indian Frontier and arrived in South Africa in October 1899.
Victoria Cross Action
At Krugersdorp after a Boer attack threatened to capture artillery guns and supplies, he led a group of volunteers, under heavy and accurate fire, to pull one of the wagons to the safety of a small kopje (hill). He was mortally wounded at this time and died of his wounds shortly after.
“His cool and gallant conduct was the admiration of all who witnessed it.”
There were two other Victoria Crosses won in the same action, Maj W E Gordon who had organized the rescue of the guns and supplies and Cpl. John F MacKay, who carried Capt. Younger to cover, after he was wounded and prior to his death. Both Gordon and MacKay survived the action.
