Further Information About WORRALL Charles Thomas

Awarded Distinguished Service Medal (DSM), mentioned in Despatches

HMS President III was a shore establishment. Based initially in Bristol and then in Windsor, it was the headquarters and accounting base for personnel on Defensively Armed Merchant Ships. Charles Worrall was serving on SS (Steamship) Clan Campbell in March 1942. The ship was part of a convoy that left Alexandria for Malta on 20th March 1942. Stormy weather protected the ships for a while but when this cleared they were sighted by enemy aircraft whilst off Cyrenaica. The aircraft summoned four Italian cruisers who made an unsuccessful attack on the allied fleet. This was followed by a further failed attack by enemy ships later on the same day. The following day, 23rd March, Clan Campbell was hit by bombs and torpedoes and had to be abandoned. Charles was one of six crew killed, including the ship’s Captain.

Charles Worrall has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Plymouth Naval Memorial.
