Further Information About WOOLLEY Samuel
Samuel Woolley was the son of Mrs Woolley who lived at 11 Cleveland Street, Stourbridge. He attended Enville St. Council School. At the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Worcester Territorials and joined the 1st/7th Battalion. They went overseas in March 1915 and experienced front line service in quiet sectors of the Western Front. In July 1916 they took a full part in the Battle of the Somme, leading the second phase attack on Ovillers on the 14th July and again on the Pozieres Ridge on 20th August. Casualties were heavy on each occasion and Private Samuel Woolley was killed in action on the 22nd August. He is also commemorated on the St. Thomas’s church and the former Enville St. school memorials.
