Further Information About WOOLLEY John Gordon

John Woolley attended Worcester Royal Grammar School from 1926 to 1931. After leaving school he worked in the County Record Office, cycling there each day from Guarlford. He enlisted in the RAF in August 1939, joining 78 Squadron on 29th December 1940 and flew 17 missions with various pilots. On the night of 18th/19th June 1941 his Whitley bomber took off from Middleton St George as part of a 77 aircraft raid to Bremen. Just short of the Dutch coast a radio message was received from the crew stating they were returning to the UK. Two further SOS messages from the aircraft were received, the final one from a position 80 miles off the English coast. Nothing further was heard from them and the aircraft and crew were never found.
