Further Information About WOOD Herbert

Herbert Wood enlisted at Birmingham on 7th September 1914.  He went to France on 28th July 1915.

Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Messenger:
Private Herbert Wood, North Stafford Regt.; Barley Mow Lane, Catshill
Mrs Henry Wood of Barley Mow Lane, Catshill, has been informed that her son, Private Herbert Wood, Lewis Gun Section, North Staffords, is in Military Hospital, Clapton, London, suffering from wounds in the head and a fractured collar bone, and that paralysis had set in.  Writing to his sister, he said he was in a dug-out when Fritz opened fire and was lucky enough to drop a shell on it, burying him.  In November, 1916, he had a similar experience, being wounded in the face and buried.  He was sent to Stourbridge Hospital, going back to the front again on 8th May 1917.  He enlisted on 7th September 1914. Previous to the war he was employed at Austin’s Motor Works.  In a letter home on Wednesday he says he is getting on as well as can be expected.

Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Messenger, 1st June 1918:
Private Herbert Wood of the North Staffordshire Regiment was wounded and gassed on the 11th May.  A telegram was received by his mother on May 15th empowering her to go and see him at the 2nd Canadian Hospital, Le Treport, France, but while waiting at the War Office for the permit to come, a wire was received saying he had passed away. Deceased enlisted on 7th September 1914.  He had been wounded and buried by a shell and had only returned to the front six weeks.  He was 28 years old and unmarried.
