Previously his regimental number was 3394, R.F.A., which confirms that he served with the 2nd (Worcester) Artillery Brigade, South Midland Division, (Territorial Force).

He first served overseas sometime after 1st January 1916.  He was awarded a British War Medal and a Victory Medal.

The 1911 census shows him as single, age 17, born 1894, living at Naunton Green, and occupation as Jobbing Gardner.
