Further Information About WESTWOOD Howard
Howard Westwood was born in Wollescote and attended Wollescote school. He enlisted in the Worcesters, probably as a regular soldier before the Great War and was called up from the Reserve to join his battalion in 1914. At some point he was transferred to the 11th Warwicks in the 37th Division. Their first serious involvement in battle came in November 1916 when they fought in the battle of the Ancre, the final phase of the 1916 Battle of the Somme. It was a major attack to gain the village of Grandcourt. Although eventually successful, the cost was heavy and among the casualties was Private Howard Westwood.
Howard Westwood has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Thiepval Memorial.
