Further Information About WARREN Arthur John Treverton

Arthur John Treverton Anthony was born on 27th December 1883 at Churchtown, Cornwall. His parents, Elizabeth Ann Anthony and William Henry Warren married almost eight weeks after his birth, on 19th February 1884 at the parish church of the Isles of Scilly. Arthur’s mother was a certified teacher and Arthur was to follow in her footsteps and become a school master. On 27th December 1910 Arthur married Olive Sarah Rook and in 1911 he took up a position at Abberley Parochial School where records show that he would have charge of Standards IV, V and VI and would give general assistance. He was paid 65 pounds per annum and allowed not less than eight weeks holiday a year. He proved a very successful school master and on 14th October 1912 he took over as Head Master of the school. Alongside his school duties, he was also the choirmaster and the Honourable Secretary to the Abberley Men’s Club.

Arthur enlisted in the army on 6th May 1916 and a temporary head master was appointed to take over his duties. By this time he was the father of two daughters, Eileen Mary and Joan Margaret. He was to return home on leave and visit the school on a couple of occasions.

An entry in the school log book on 29th October 1917 reads:
“The sad news was received yesterday that Mr Warren the Head Master of this school had been killed in action.”
