WAREHAM Frederick William

Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral under Malvern casualties.

Frederick Wareham was the eldest son of Frederick and Harriett Wareham.  He attended Worcester Royal Grammar School from 1904 to 1908.  He was killed during the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme.  One of his younger brothers, Lawrence, also fell just 3 weeks later in the Somme offensive.

Malvern News, 15th July 1916:
Mr F. Wareham, the headmaster of Leigh Sinton School has received notice of the death of his eldest son Lt F.W. Wareham, Royal Warwicks.  Lt F.W. Wareham went out to the front in December 1914 as a Cpl in the 1/12th London Regt (The Rangers) and was wounded in March 1915.  He obtained a commission in the Royal Warwicks in June 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant in November 1915.  He proceeded to the front in Easter week.  He was an Old Elizabethan, and for sometime a student teacher at Malvern Link Council School and afterwards a student at Saltley Training College 1911-12.  At the outbreak of war he was engaged by the LCC at St Matthews Boys School, Westminster.  Mr Wareham has two other sons in the army – 2/Lt R.C. Wareham and 2/Lt L.J. Wareham are both in the Worcestershire Regiment.

Frederick Wareham has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Thiepval Memorial.
