HMS Hawke was sailing with her sister ship HMS Theseus off Aberdeen in the North Sea when the ships came under attack from the German submarine U-9. The submarine’s torpedo missed Theseus but hit HMS Hawke igniting a magazine. The resulting explosion tore the ship apart and she sank within 10 minutes with the loss of her Captain, 26 officers and 497 men. From her crew of 594 men, there were just 70 survivors.
