The birth of Anthony L. Vinnicombe is registered in the March Quarter 1924 under the Wandsworth Registration District.

Anthony Vinnicombe was the only son of William and Beryl Vinnicombe of 22 Winchester Avenue, Worcester.  He attended Worcester Royal Grammar School from 1935 to 1939 and after leaving school he took up employment at the Motor House, Bath Road, Worcester.

In July 1944 the 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment as part of the 185th Brigade was given the task of capturing the villages of Cuillerville and Emieville to the East of Caen.  The attack was part of the Allies plan to capture the city of Caen and break the German resistance that was halting the D-Day landings advance.  The attack commenced on 18th July and after much hard fighting which led to 34 men killed in action, 202 wounded and 12 missing, the two villages were taken by 23rd July.  Anthony Vinnicombe was wounded during the fighting and died of his wounds on 25th July.

Worcester L/Corpl. Dies of Wounds
L/Corpl. Anthony Vinnicombe, only son of Mrs. Vinnicombe, of 22, Winchester Avenue, Worcester, died of wounds in Normandy on July 25. L/Cpl Vinnicombe, who was 20 years of age, was a pupil at Worcester Royal Grammar School, and was afterwards employed at the Motor House, Bath Road.

A letter from B. Derry, 18 Lechmere Crescent, Hallow Road, Worcester, dated 7th May 1950 can be found within war records held at Worcester County Record Office requesting that Lance Corporal A.L. Vinnicombe, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, Service No 5127268, be added to the county roll of honour.
