The 1891 census records that Joseph aged 17, was a ‘hall boy’ in service for the Buckley family in Madely, Staffordshire. The serving staff for Mrs Caroline Buckley and her two sons James 20 and David 26, also comprised of a male domestic servant, a butler, a cook, a footman, a kitchen maid, a scullery maid, 2 laundry maids and 2 house maids.
