Joseph Wilfred Tromans was appointed as Police Constable No 191, Worcester Constabulary on 15th July 1905. At the the time he joined the police force he stated he was 18 on 28th December 1886 and was born in the parish of Cradley near Stourbridge, Worcestershire. He was currently resident at Two Gates, Cradley. Joseph was single and his previous employment was for Mr Charles Beasley as a carter in Cradley. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed 13 stone 7lbs, his chest measurement was 38 inches and he had a fresh complexion with grey eyes and light brown hair. Joseph spent 9 years and 331 days with the constabulary, rising to Constable 1st Class, working at Police Headquarters in Worcester until 29th August 1905 and then at Kings Heath police station from 30th August 1905 until 16th December 1907. On 17th December 1907 he transferred to Northfield police station until 8th November 1911, from 9th November 1911 until 24th June 1912 he was lent temporarily to Birmingham police station. He moved to Evesham police station on 25th June 1912 where he remained until he resigned from the police force on 10th June 1915 to enlist in the army on 11th June 1915. Commendations and awards:- 18th January 1906 at Kings Heath, specially commended by the Chief Constable for acting with great promptitude and prescence of mind at a fire. 15th February 1908 at Northfield, meritorious conduct in stopping a runaway horse. Awarded Merit Badge by the Chief Constable, rewarded by Standing Joint Committee 2 pounds. Joseph married Fanny Pinfold from Alveston, Warwickshire on 2nd October 1915.

It would appear that Joseph either did not know his exact date of birth or he hid his real age when joining the police force. His birth is registered in the March Quarter 1888 under the Stourbridge Registration District.
On the 1911 census he is recorded as a police constable, age 24, at Mosley Police Station, Birmingham.
