Further Information About TREE Charles James

The 9th Worcestershire’s sailed from England on the “Cawdor Castle” on the morning of 24th June 1915.  They were bound for Gallipoli, eventually arriving on July 13th after touching at Malta and Alexandria.  Arriving after dark, disembarkation was long and toilsome and was followed by a march along the coast to the reserve shelters among the cliffs of Gully Beach.  The enemy’s trenches stretched, row behind row, across the gently rising slopes leading up to Krithia.  The battalion took over the trenches at Gully Beach on the 16th July and held them for twenty four hours during which time one officer was killed and Lieutenant Charles Tree was mortally wounded.
