Further Information About TRAVERS Spencer Robert Valentine

Mentioned in Despatches.

Spencer Travers was born in 1894 and attended Bromsgrove School from 1908-1913. He had been destined for the army but a laboratory accident made a high place at Woolwich uncertain whereby he went to Dublin University. He enlisted in the Royal Munster Fusiliers at the outbreak of war and was killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

Spencer Travers was Head of School House and a Sergeant in the OTC. He went to Dublin University where he rowed in the Junior boat and showed promise as an oar. On the War breaking out he, with his brother, joined the Munsters. No-one who had watched his grip of his XV in a football match could doubt that he would show himself a dashing leader of men or that in the hottest place he would be at his coolest. He was as full of resource as he was of courage and would have developed into an officer of unusual capacity.
