Further Information About TORODE John Henry
The following report relating to VE Day commemorations appears in the Black Country Bugle, Thursday 7th May 2015:
John Henry Torode was born in St Peter Port, Guernsey, on August 7th, 1907, one of 12 children of blacksmith Elias Charles Torode and Mary Ellen Crews. John married Dorothy Gwendoline Moon and their first son, John Lia Torode, was born in August 1937. John worked at a grocer’s until he enlisted in the army in 1939. He joined the 1st Battalion The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) and served in the 8th Army, seeing action in North Africa and Italy.
The capitulation of France in May 1940 posed a great threat to the Channel Islands. Dorothy and young John left Guernsey on the last boat provided by the British Government to evacuate those who wished to leave the island. They rented accommodation in Ivanhoe Street, Dudley and a further two sons, Ronald Henry and Michael Stanley were born there in 1941 and 1943. John was fortunate to see baby Ronald when he came home on leave but he did not live to see his youngest son Michael. John died in Italy in 1944. In September 1949 Dorothy and a close friend, Millie Lloyd, went on a government assisted trip for war widows and visited John’s grave in Ancona War Cemetery.
The report includes a photograph of John Torode.
