The following report is given in a newspaper dated 29th December 1917:
Mr and Mrs Edward Tomkins, of Ripple have received news that their fifth son, Pte William Tomkins, of the Royal Warwicks, died on the 8th December from wounds received in action.
The deceased was in his 20th year, and joined the Army in February last. He attended Ripple School as a boy, and also sang in the village choir. Before joining the Army he was in the employ of Mr E. W. Allard, of Ripple bank.
Mr and Mrs Tomkins lost another son in September, 1915, and have two others still serving in France.
