Further Information About TIMMS Charles William
Charles Timms was born in 1886 in Snowshill and baptised in Blockley, possibly a reflection of a practice of the time whereby children were often taken to their mother’s birthplace for baptism. His father Charles worked as a farm labourer.
The family had moved to Draycott by 1891, and were living in Blockley in 1901. Charles was at home throughout and working as a “carter boy”. In 1909 he married Mary Edginton, a Blockley girl, the marriage registered under the Shipston Registration District. Their first child, a son, died within six months of birth, but two further sons survived and are recorded in documents dated 1911 and 1913. Charles was living throughout at the Old Jockey Stables in Blockley, working as a carter.
Charles fought with the 10th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment during WW1. This battalion was formed in 1914 and after training deployed to France in August the following year. Charles joined them there two months later. He will have enlisted probably in early 1915 and must thus have been a volunteer, as conscription was not introduced until 1916. After he was killed in action in August 1916, his wife may have remained in the area. She was living in Station Road, Blockley, when the Commonwealth War Graves Commission material was generated. She must be the Mary E. Timms who was living at Longborough when she died in 1963 at the age of 79. Her death was registered in the North Cotswold district and she was buried at Blockley.
