John Tidmarsh was born in December 1870 in Abberton, and was baptised at St Edburga’s Abberton, on 11th December 1870. His father George was born in Abberton in February 1846 and was one of eleven children; George married Elizabeth Brewer, who was born in Upton Snodsbury in 1843, and they had three children (Millicent, born 1869, Alfred, born 1875, and John). John’s father George died in April 1876, aged 30, being buried at St Edburga’s on 20th April 1876. His mother Elizabeth then married James Tredwell at St James, Bishampton, and they both went to live in Bishampton. James died in September 1894, aged 55. John’s brother Alfred lived at the Rookery in Bishampton.

In 1911, aged 40 and still single, John is shown living in the village with his (twice) widowed mother and his two Tredwell half-brothers.
