Isaac Threlfell has been identified as a casualty from WW1 by family member John Threlfell and the following information is courtesy and copyright of John:
Isaac Threlfell was my grandfather’s brother. He emigrated to South Africa, as did his brother George Roper Threlfell. In the First World War he was a major and later lieutenant colonel (although this may be an acting rank) in the 10th South African Horse. He died of malaria on 4th January 1918 whilst on active service. He is mentioned in the London Gazette issue 30856. He appears on the Kings School Boer War memorial as having served in the Boer War. His brother, George, was captured in France, but survived and went back to South Africa. The other brother mentioned, Gabriel, was a lieutenant commander in the navy, but left in 1912.
The following information has been researched and transcribed by Eve Fraser:
The Threlfells were prominent in Martley society and both Isaac and Gabriel were keen cricketers. Isaac is listed as a player in the 1891 Martley Cricket Team. He may possibly appear in a photograph of the cricket team taken in 1891 but it has not been possible to identify him.
There are no Threlfells listed in Martley on the 1901 census but a Richard Threlfell, widower, born in Cumberland is recorded as an Assistant Farmer, boarding at Upton Bishop, Herefordshire.
