Further Information About THOMAS William

The following information has been researched by Geoff Hill:
1891 Census
65 Worcester Road, Pershore.
William Thomas, aged 7, born Worksop.
1911 Census
26 Walden Street, Castleford, Yorkshire,
William Thomas, Boarder, Road Man, below ground, working at the colliery.

The 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment was a Regular Army battalion. William Thomas enlisted on the 29th September 1904. As he was employed working underground in a Yorkshire coal mine in 1911, he was presumably recalled to the regiment in 1914 as a Reservist on the outbreak of war.

On the 4th August 1914, the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment was stationed at Aldershot as part of the 5th Brigade of the 2nd Division. On the 14th August the battalion was mobilised for war and landed at at Boulogne-sur-Mer for service on the Western Front.

The 20th September 1914 was the start of action on the Aisne Heights. A German attack on Allied lines on the Chemin-de-Dames ridge just before dawn on this date caused severe problems for I Corps as the 2nd Division, which included the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, was attacked on the Beaulne Spur, north of Moussy-Verneuil.

William Thomas has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial.
