The following information has been researched by Brian Hill:
The 1911 census shows Alfred Taylor as a scholar living at 33 The Moors, Worcester with his father Alfred Taylor, who was a labourer in a leather factory, and younger sisters Nellie and Gladys. Alfred first entered the theatre of war sometime after 31st January 1915.

On 20th October 1917 his battalion was in Railway Wood trenches in front of Inverness Copse, with their Right on the Menin Road and Left on the Scherriabeck. This was described as a “dirty place in both senses of the word”. The war diary notes that “At 4am the Bosche laid down 15 minutes annihilating fire from our support line backwards with the result that we had 6 killed 14 wounded, the Shropshires behind us suffered pretty badly too”.
