Denys Stuart-Shepherd was born on 31st May 1893.  Prior to enlisting he had been a student from May 1912 to August 1914 at The College, Kelham, Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire.  He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Worcestershire Regiment before transferring with the same rank to the 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment with attachment to the Royal Air Force.  Denys was appointed Acting Captain on 1st April 1918, retaining the rank on 27th November 1918.  His next of kin was his father, Reverend C.S. Stuart-Shepherd, The Vicarage, Alfrick, Worcester.  Denys was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal which were to be issued by the air ministry.  His contact address on his medal index card was given as 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, Newcastle, Jamaica, British West Indies.
