Frederick Stone was born in 1896 in Worcester, the son of William and Ellen Stone (nee Best) who had married in Worcester in 1887. The family resided in Astwood Road, Worcester and William was employed as a railway engine driver. After leaving school Frederick worked in the printing trade until he was most likely conscripted into the Worcestershire Regiment in 1916 at the age of 19.
