Harvey Stokes enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 16th August 1916 in Melbourne, Victoria. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Worcestershire, England, his age as 28 years and 5 months, his occupation as a butcher and his next of kin as his wife, Mrs Beatrice Stokes. Harvey was 5 feet 2¼ inches tall with a medium complexion, brown eyes and black hair.
Harvey was wounded in action on 19th September 1917 and was admitted to the 12th Casualty Clearing Station with a gunshot wound to his back on 20th September. He was transferred to a hospital in England and once recovered he returned to his battalion on 9th March 1918. On 1st September 1918 he was again wounded in action and was admitted to the 37th Casualty Clearing Station suffering with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. He was transferred to the General Hospital at Rouen and returned to duty on 27th September 1918. returned to Australia on 5th September 1919 and was discharged from the army on 20th October 1919.
