Harry Stevens lived at ‘High View’, Duncombe Street, Wollaston, and was educated at Wollaston C of E School and Stourbridge Grammar School.  He later went on to Saltley Training College and taught at a Birmingham school.  He enlisted as a volunteer in the Warwicks Territorials and joined the 1/8th (Aston) Battalion in the 48th (South Midland) Division.  They went to France in March 1915 and were sent for front line duty near Armentieres.  There were no major battles here at this time but there were always snipers and shellfire.  Lance Corporal Harry Stevens was wounded by rifle fire on the 23rd June and died the next day at an advanced dressing station.
