Alfred William Spencer was born Bradford in 1897, the only child of Thomas James Spencer and Clara Spencer nee Ross. They lived at 5, Finstall Road, Aston Fields, Bromsgrove. Thomas was a Blacksmith.

Alfred enlisted in Birmingham and was posted to Salonika on August 27th 1916.

Mr T.J. Spencer of Finstall Road, Aston Fields, received news on Tuesday, that his son Private Alfred W. Spencer of the Worcestershire Regiment is in hospital at Alexandria, suffering from wounds. Private Spencer was formally employed as a clerk in the office of the Bromsgrove Guild. He was a Sunday School Teacher at St Godwald’s Finstall, and also a server at church. He embarked on active service on August 27th.
