Upton on Severn News, 29th May 1915:
Mr and Mrs Smith of The Bow, Ripple, have received official notification of the death of their son, Pte. W. H. Smith, of the 2nd South Wales Borderers, who was killed in the attack upon the Dardanelles. Pte. Smith, who was a single man, came home from China after the siege and fall of Tsing Tan, and spent a few days leave at his home in Ripple.
