Sergeant smith was attached to a Canadian squadron and was in one of 442 aircraft that took off to bomb railway targets around the town of Aachen in Germany. On the return flight the Lancaster bomber (KB706 VR-A) was shot down by a German night fighter over Holland. Seven airmen perished in the crash.
