James Smith was the only son of William and Annie Smith, who lived in one of the tenements of the large timber-framed building in Church Lane on what is now the Rose and Crown green.  He had worked in a drapery store in Worcester for a time and then for the County Council.  He joined the RAF in 1940 and trained as a flight mechanic, being posted to India in July the following year.  In March 1944, while serving with No 1 Repair and Storage Unit near the Burma border he contracted malaria, followed by a sharp attack of pneumonia which proved fatal.
