Further Information About SMITH James John

Appears on the Army casualties list for Worcestershire.

James Smith joined the Warwicks and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in the 3rd Division.  They had trained a long time for the Normandy invasion and were among the first troops ashore on Sword Beach.  They followed the leading battalions and then helped to push the advance half way to Caen.  The advance then stalled in the face of several powerful Panzer counter attacks.  It was nearly a month before a strong Allied attack was mounted for a direct attack on Caen which had become the pivot of the German defences.  On the 8th July the 3rd Division attacked at dawn following a massive aerial bombardment.  Most of Caen fell but Pte James Smith died of wounds on the 10th July.
