Pre 1939 Harry lived at The Chapel, Buckeridge, the son of William and Louise Smith (nee Price). He enlisted in 1939 at the age of 20 and was killed when the destroyer HMS Vortigern was sunk in the North Sea. Medals awarded:- 1939 – 45 Star, Atlantic Star, 1939 -1945 War Medal..

HMS Vortigern was escorting a coastal convoy when she was torpedoed and sunk off Cromer by the German E-boat S-104 on 15 March 1942. She sank with the loss of 110 lives, only 14 survivors were rescued.
