Frank Smith was born on 23rd July 1890, the son of Joseph and Eliza Smith of Bewdley, Worcestershire. He entered Old Swinford Hospital on 9th June 1900 and left the school on 13th June 1906 when he was apprenticed to Mr Chas. Heath, butcher of Pensax, Worcestershire. Indentures were cancelled on 24th October 1906 owing to ill-treatment of the boy by the master.
