Further Information About SMITH Baden

NHM Ascot was a paddle steamer minesweeper. Commissioned in 1916 she was one of twenty four ships named after racecourses. Leaving Portsmouth on 7th November 1918, she was torpedoed by UB67 off the Farne Islands whilst enroute to Granton. The ship sank with the loss of all on board, one day before the armistice was signed. She was the last British ship lost to enemy action in WW1.

Baden Smith has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
