Further Information About SMART Gilbert
H.M.A.S. Yarra was a Grimsby Class Sloop. On 4th March she was escorting several ships to Fremantle, Australia after the Allied collapse in Singapore when she came under attack from a squadron of Japanese heavy cruisers. All four Allied ships were sunk, H.M.A.S. Yarra being the last, finally sinking at 08.00 with the loss of 117 crew. Of the 34 crew members who survived the attack, 21 died on the life rafts from exposure, wounds or losing their senses and jumping overboard.
