Further Information About SHARP Llewellyn
Llewellyn Sharp was born in Blockley in 1898. He was at home at the High Street in the village in 1901, with his mother and step-sisters (surname Rouse). His father was a Reservist and at that time was “at the Front”, presumably having been called up for service in South Africa (Boer War). The father George was at home in 1911, a labourer, with Llewellyn a schoolboy.
Llewellyn served in World War 1. His personal documents have not survived but there are others still in existence. He enlisted in the Household Battalion, was posted to France, and then transferred to the Coldstream Guards whilst there when the Household Battalion was disbanded.
The Household Battalion was formed in September 1916 from the Reserves of the Household Cavalry Regiments. Presumably Llewellyn was conscripted into the armed forces in the first half of 1916 (as a single man) and was posted to the Battalion when it was formed. His service number in the Coldstream Guards is valid for transfer in February 1918 when the Battalion was disbanded; indeed, in the Guards’ medals roll Llewellyn is one of many who transferred together.
