Philemon Sewell was born at Hockley, Birmingham in 1891. Prior to the war he was employed as a shop assistant. He enlisted at Rugby and went to France on 20th May 1915.
Bromsgrove Droitwich and Redditch Messenger, 19th May 1917:
Mrs Sewell of 54, Worcester Street, Bromsgrove received official news this week that her husband 11056, Private Philemon Sewell, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, had died in hospital on May 3rd, from wounds received in action. Private Sewell joined the colours two years and nine months ago and has been at the front the whole of the time since the completion of a short period of training. He was wounded in September 1916 and brought home to a Leeds Hospital. Upon recovery, he was ordered to return to the front in January but obtained special leave and on January 11th he married Miss May Depper, third daughter of Mr George Depper, of Worcester Street, Bromsgrove. Before enlisting, he was an assistant at the Maypole Company’s shop in Bromsgrove. Deceased was 26 years of age.
