Further Information About SALE Henry Richard

Henry Sale was born in Blockley and baptised in Blockley Church on 24th November 1895, the only son of the 4 children of Henry and Ellen Sale. Henry senior was employed as a gardener. In 1901 and 1911, Henry was at home with his parents on the latter date working as a learner in gramophone manufacture. Perhaps he then moved to Birmingham, for he enlisted in that city for war service with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He may have enlisted into the 14th Battalion, based on his service number (14/1702) but he was with the 15th Battalion when he died. These were two of three Birmingham Battalions of the regiment – the other was the 16th – formed in September 1914 and deployed to France in July the following year. Henry was not with them when they deployed as he does not have a 1915 Star. He was more likely to have been a conscripted soldier who was called up in early 1916 and joined his regiment in France later that year. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
