Gilbert Rubery was born on 16th May 1891. He entered Dudley Grammar School in January 1905 when his parent was given as W.B. Rubery, home address: Hill Crest, Woodsetton.
Gilbert Rubery enlisted as Private 439324 in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on the 31st May 1915 at Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Tipton, Staffordshire, England, his date of birth as 16th May 1891, his next of kin as his father, Mr W.B. Rubery, Hill Crest, Woodsetton and his occupation as a Bank Clerk. He was 5 feet 9½ inches tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion.
Gilbert sailed with his unit from Canada on 23rd November 1915. He embarked from England bound for France on 20th February 1916, arriving there the following day. He was appointed Lance Corporal on the 19th September 1916 and attended Bombing School Instruction in October 1916. In June 1917 Gilbert was admitted to the 1st Canadian General Hospital at Etaples, France for Boils. He was transferred to the Manor Hospital, Epsom, England for treatment and was discharged to light duties with his unit on 22nd August 1917. Gilbert died from pneumonia at 59 Casualty Clearing Station on 29th May 1918
