Charles Rogers enlisted for a period of 7 years in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in January 1907. On his attestation paper he gave his place of birth as Treflach, Oswestry, Shropshire, his age as 20 years 11 months and his occupation as a Coal Miner. He was 5 feet 9½ inches tall with a fresh complexion, brown eyes and black hair. He remained on Home service until January 1908 when he was posted to India and Burma, returning to the UK in February 1914 at the expiration of his period of military service. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in 3rd February 1914 when he was 26 years 3 months of age, 5 feet 11 inches tall with the same details relating to his personal appearance. His intended place of residence was Cottage Lane, St Martins near Oswestry. He was recalled to the regiment on 3rd August 1914 and the next day following the outbreak of war he was posted overseas to France arriving there on 6th October 1914. He was initially posted as missing on 30th October 1914 and it was possibly as late as 20th March 1916 before he was officially assumed to have died on or since that date. At the time of his death he had served a total of 7 years 301 days with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
