POWELL Charles Donald

C. Donald Powell, Durban (S.A.) Light Infantry is listed in “Stourport Men and the War” – a list of men serving: Kidderminster Shuttle, 19th December 1914.

C Donald Powell was the youngest son of the late John William and Agnes Powell of 16 Mitton Street, Stourport. Educated at the Hartlebury Grammar School, he had an adventurous life. For some years he held a position with Mr Richard Wise of the Bull Ring, Kidderminster after which he took up a post in South Africa where he toured the whole of the union. When war broke out he at once joined the Durban Light Infantry and afterwards volunteered for service in Europe. He retained his connection with the South African contingent and enjoyed the reputation of being the first member to be promoted on the field of battle, without coming home for instruction. His death took place during the Battle of Arras, while in charge of an observation post.
