Further Information About PHIPSON George
George Phipson was employed as an iron-plate worker at Messrs Ludlow of Lye. He enlisted in December 1914 and joined the Cheshires. He was sent to the 1st Battalion which had been involved in heavy action since August 1914. They were on the Somme in 1916 and in early 1917 at Messines and the Battles of Arras. By September they held the front line close to the Hindenburg Line but Private George Phipson was sent to a Casualty Clearing Station with appendicitis where he died on the 25th September at the age of 32.
