HANBURY SOLDIER’S DEATH
Signaller Hubert Leonard Petford (23)Royal Corps of Signals, Hanbury Wharf, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Charles Petford, Westfields Cottage, Hanbury, died in Hayley Green Sanatorium on Monday. He was a grandson of the late Mr and Mrs John Petford, of Broughton Green, and married Miss Elsie May Taylor, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred Taylor, Hanbury. She is left with a twelve months old boy.
Signaller Petford was formerly employed on the Hanbury Hall Estate, and later by the Hanbury Wharf Brick Company. He was called up two years ago and served in France from where he was invalided home to hospitals at Cardiff and Barnsley Hall, before going to Hayley Green.
A letter from the Reverend L.J. Birch, Hanbury, dated April 1950 can be found within war records held at Worcestershire Archives requesting that Signalman Hubert Leonard Petford, Royal Corps of Signals, be added to the county roll of honour.
Sergeant H.L. Petford of Hanbury Wharf Nr Bromsgrove appears on a list of men from the Bromsgrove District killed in the 1939 – 1945 war, provided by the Reverend C.W. Banner, “Tuffley”, 19 Stourbridge Road, Bromsgrove, dated 29th June 1950.
