Further Information About PEEDELL William
Awarded Air Force Cross (AFC).
Born 28th September 1918.
William Peedell served with the RAF as a Lancaster pilot during WW2, flying with 166 and 156 Squadrons. He continued his career with the RAF after the war and was awarded the AFC in 1951 although there appears to be no citation for it. On 3rd January 1966 William was flying a Westland Scout AH1 helicopter, registration XR638, when it encountered engine problems while on a delivery flight from Wroughton to Middle Wallop. It lost height and crashed tail first at Marlborough, Wiltshire. It then caught fire and burnt out killing the two crew. Caused by inadvertent closure of the fuel cock in mistake for the heater control.
