The birth of Cuthbert James Pearce is registered in the June Quarter 1894 under the Easingwold (Yorkshire) Registration District.

2nd Lieut., Machine Gun Corps.
Born April 24, 1894. Fell in France, September 3, 1916.
Cuthbert Pearce was the second son of the Reverend W. Pearce, Rector of Flyford Flavell.  He entered the School House in May, 1905, and left in May, 1909, to learn fruit-farming in which he was doing well when the War broke out.  He enlisted in the Warwicks, obtained a commission in the Worcester Regiment, and then transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.  He was for five months fighting in France and fell when attached to the 17th Company on Sunday, September 3rd, on the Somme.  He was a steady and persevering fellow, who regularly visited his old School.

A Memorial Service for The Men of Worcester and the Neighbourhood who have laid down their lives in the war was held in Worcester Cathedral on All Saints Day, 1916 at 7.30pm. 2nd Lieut. C.J. Pearce, Machine Gun Corps is listed on the Roll of Honour in the service booklet under Old Vigornians.
