HMS Exmouth was hit by torpedo fire from U22 whilst on convoy defence duties in the Moray Firth, off Wick, Caithness. It is believed that HMS Exmouth’s magazine exploded when hit by a torpedo. She sank rapidly with the loss of all 189 crew, there were no survivors.
A memorial book to the fallen of WW2 can be found in St Andrew’s Church, Netherton. Information on P.L. Payne states that he was killed in action whilst serving with the Royal Navy on HMS Exmouth. Home Address: Cradley Rd.
