“Killed in Action”
Whilst sniping over the parapet of a trench South West of Messines, an enemy shell passed overhead, he turned to see where it exploded and in doing so exposed himself, and was hit in the head and killed by a rifle bullet.

Alexander Pailthorpe was known as Frank to the family. He had 8 brothers and one sister, Grace, who became a doctor in WW1 and then a surrealist artist. Grace never married. The family were brought up in Redhill, Surrey. Frank worked as a market gardener in Evesham before emigrating to Canada in 1912. He was only a lodger at Briarlea. The family moved from Redhill, Surrey to Lancashire in 1904.
